10. Tokyo     Price per unleaded litre: $1.90 (美金为单位)

While Tokyo places tenth on this list, compared to 17th on a similar CNN ranking compiled in 2005, gas prices in the Japanese capital haven't risen by as much as you might think. Five years ago, according to the Economist, a litre of gasoline cost $1.70 in Tokyo; that's a near 12 per cent increase in price, which is plenty but peanuts compared to some of the astronomical pump hikes seen by other cities on this list.

9. Osaka     Price per unleaded litre: $1.91

By contrast to Tokyo, my, oh my, how Osaka gas prices have gotten out of hand. Ten years ago, according to the Economist's data, a litre of unleaded fuel cost just 77 cents in the Japanese city, and even last year it would run only about $1.29 - not cheap, but not out of place on a list such as this. Yet year-over-year, Osaka motorists must have been rubbing their eyes, as the cost of a litre of gas jumped a remarkable 62 cents, a spike of some 48 per cent.

8. Hong Kong      Price per unleaded litre: $2.13

Technically, Hong Kong isn't a city — it's a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China — but chances are such classification gives no solace to its drivers. Hong Kong is the first entry on this list to break the two dollar mark for a litre of fuel, though last year that might have seemed impossible. According to the Economist, a litre of unleaded gas cost just $1.08 in Hong Kong in 2011, meaning fuel prices have nearly doubled year-over-year.

6. Manchester (tie)      Price per unleaded litre: $2.15

What's that about nearly doubling gas prices? In Manchester, gas prices actually have doubled year-over-year, soaring to $2.15 in 2012 after coming in at just $1.06 per litre in 2011. Such a staggering leap simply completes the meteoric ascension of gas prices in Manchester, where a litre of unleaded could be had for as little as 47 cents 10 years ago, the second-lowest sum then of any city on this list.

6. London (tie)      Price per unleaded litre: $2.15

Gas prices in Manchester's fellow U.K. town London, however, haven't been so volatile, despite the end result being the same. Follow this one, if you can: 10 years ago, a litre of gas cost 94 cents in London, a price bested by only one city on this list at that time. Then, somehow last year's fuel prices in London ($1.67 per litre) were actually lower than they were five years ago ($1.89 per litre), the only entrant on this top ten to see its gas prices decrease at one point over past decade. Confusing? Sure, but what filters out of it all is this: a litre of gas now costs $2.15 in London, the sixth-highest mark in the entire world.

5. Paris     Price per unleaded litre: $2.17

Last year, Paris was the only city on earth to break the two-dollar mark ($2.00 even) for gas per litre, which made it the world's most expensive town for fuel. Yet thanks to seismic year-over-year jumps by four other European cities, Paris falls to fifth in 2012, despite its gas stations charging more than twice for gas than they did a decade ago. Ten years earlier, according to the Economist, gas cost $1.07 per litre, which seems low by comparison but still made Paris the world's most expensive city for fuel even back then.

4. Frankfurt     Price per unleaded litre: $2.23

Over the past 10 years, fuel prices in Germany's most expensive city have nearly tripled (a decade ago, a litre of gas cost 82 cents), though perhaps a better barometer for comparison is how Frankfurt driving costs stack up against a city this side of the Atlantic. At last check, during late February, some of Canada's most expensive gasoline cost in the high $1.30s per litre. That's plenty for us, but some 38 per cent cheaper than what Frankfurt motorists have to fork over to run their Benzes and BMWs.

3. Zurich       Price per unleaded litre: $2.26

Thanks to skyrocketing prices of other key consumer measures, staples like a loaf of bread or kilo of white rice, Zurich is this year's most expensive city to live in, according to the Economist. Yet when it comes to driving, two towns, and one even in the same country, best the Swiss capital. Thanks in part to gas prices per litre that jumped some 41 per cent year-over-year, Zurich leapfrogged Tokyo, where gas prices rose just seven per cent from a year earlier, to become the world's costliest city to live in 2012, by the Economist's latest rankings.

2. Geneva     Price per unleaded litre: $2.28

汔油价格最高的十大城市 - -allen-同学 - 活在过去

That other Swiss city, of course, is Geneva, where fuel prices make what Canadians pay seem laughable. In fact, even in Australia, where gas prices in Sydney and Melbourne ($1.50 per litre each) dwarf what Canuck drivers are subject to domestically, fuel comes cheap compared to Geneva, which can boast the second-most expensive gas in the world in 2012. Remarkably, though, it is another European city that stops Geneva from laying claim to the priciest city for fuel in the continent ...

1. Oslo

Price per unleaded litre: $2.61

汔油价格最高的十大城市 - -allen-同学 - 活在过去

Oslo, with pump reads that make taking public transit that's among the world's priciest seem like a good deal, is the city that stops Geneva cold in its tracks where European fuel costs are considered — also the town, of course, that can advertise the most expensive gasoline in the world. At $2.61 per litre of unleaded fuel, Oslo's gas is 15 per cent costlier than even the second-place city on this list, and drivers of the Norwegian capital might get pretty frustrated when they compare its fuel price against that of other major cities. In Oslo, according to the Economist, gas is more than twice as expensive as other flagship towns like Moscow (96 cents per litre), New York ($1.11), Bangkok ($1.20) and Shanghai ($1.20).
