Top 10 most overrated cities in the world

You've always heard these places are prime tourist destinations, but are they really? MSN debunks the myths surrounding these much-hyped cities.

First, a disclaimer: Travel is often a matter of attitude, timing and taste. Nasty weather and a foul mood can turn a potentially memorable trip into a disappointment, while one traveller's dream destination can be another's nightmare. That said, there are certain spots that simply don't deserve the attention they get. It could be that the tourist traps overwhelm the genuine niceties. Perhaps dirty streets or smoggy air drags them down. Or maybe the locals are rude and the lineups long. We're not saying these cities are complete dumps — indeed, some are worth a visit. Just don't expect them to live up to expectations, and don't feel bad about nixing them from your itinerary. Click through for our picks of the most overrated tourist destinations.

1. Athens   希腊~雅典

The Acropolis, Mount Lycabettus, the National Archaeological Museum — all are definitely worth a visit. It's just a shame they couldn't be situated someplace else. Even with the airport and public transit improvements that accompanied the 2006 Olympics, the Greek capital is a crowded, dirty warren of poorly-maintained streets filled with surly locals. After a couple of days here — the city is an unavoidable hub for most travellers arriving in Greece — an escape to the idyllic Greek isles will seem like a godsend.

2. Bangkok   泰国~曼谷

Thailand's capital may have been a heady hedonistic hotspot decades ago, but these days the backpacker hangouts around Khao San Road and the seedy strip clubs and massage parlours of the Patpong red-light district are more depressing than depraved. The Grand Palace and a few ornate Wats shouldn't be missed, but the polluted Chao Phraya River and the city's overtaxed infrastructure team up to make a trip to the country's plentiful beaches or verdant jungles seem imperative sooner rather than later.

3. Los Angeles   美国~洛杉矶

The City of Angels' few pockets of interest — Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Venice Beach — can't make up for the fact that the second most populous city in the United States has come to define the concept of urban sprawl. Then there are the crowded freeways — the birthplace of the term "road rage" after a spate of driver shootings in the late 1980s — the smog, the gang warfare ... does this sound like a great holiday yet?

4. Niagara Falls   尼亚加拉大瀑布

Canada shares its contribution to this list with the United States, but outdoes its southern neighbour when it comes to tackiness. The goofy haunted houses and wax museums of Clifton Hill, along with the casinos and all-you-can-eat buffets, somehow manage to overshadow the majesty of the falls themselves. Better to check out the bucolic lakeside town of Niagara-on-the-Lake just a short drive north.

5. Dubai   阿联酋~迪拜

What do you get when you cross out-of-control development with questionable taste and poor urban planning? You get Dubai, where it simply won't do if it's not the biggest in the world. It all gets a bit monotonous: the world's tallest building, the world's largest airport, the world's largest theme park, the world's biggest mall — all of it utterly fabricated and focused on relentless consumerism. Heck, there's even an indoor ski hill, and if you travelled halfway around the world to ski indoors in the desert, well, perhaps Dubai is for you after all.

6. Cancun   墨西哥~坎昆

With so much prime resort real estate along Mexico's Mayan Rivera, we're not sure why anyone would visit Cancun proper. The city's fast-food franchises, souvenir shops, belligerent spring breakers and tourist-targeting transitos (traffic police) make the place unappealing despite its glorious beach. And as the gap between upscale resorts and their low-rent counterparts continues to widen, options that are both appealing and accessible are being squeezed out.

7. Gibraltar   直布罗陀

This bastion of Britishness on Spain's southern tip is so out of place that it's been drawing misguidedly curious travellers for decades. The famous Rock? A modest cliff that would be ignored elsewhere. The pampered monkeys that live there, and the unimpressive cave system, aren't anything to write home about, and the omnipresent tax-free shops and replica pubs feel as fake as the tans sported by the droves of cruise ship passengers crowding the streets.

8. Orlando   美国~奥兰多

Urban sprawl is one thing, but we're not sure what it means when a city is an ugly hodgepodge of theme parks, parking lots, shopping malls, hotels, golf courses and housing subdivisions. If you're visiting for one of the aforementioned attractions, fine, but don't expect a vibrant city beyond the fantasy lands. Because there isn't one.

9. Florence   意大利~佛罗伦萨

After standing in line for hours to get into the world-famous Uffizi Gallery, you could be forgiven for thinking that the horde of classical sculpture inside could have carved itself while you waited. Likewise, the city's iconic Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) is often so crowded that it's tough to appreciate the riverside views of Tuscany's capital. In the end, compared with the archaeological and architectural glory of Rome and the unique watery lanes of Venice, Florence doesn't quite measure up.

10. Dublin   爱尔兰~都柏林

Like Athens, Dublin is an unavoidable jumping off point for exploring a charming country. But unlike Athens, there really aren't any A-list sights to speak of. The Guinness Brewery is little more than mildly interesting — free samples notwithstanding — while the boozy Temple Bar district is good for little more than drunk-spotting. A trip to Dublin's real draw — the surrounding towns and countryside — should be undertaken without delay.
